The National Road was the first federally funded road project in the United States. In 1806, President Thomas Jefferson signed the act that commenced construction ofthe road from Cumberland, Maryland, to Vandalia, Illinois.
The National Road Heritage Corridor, which traverses 90 miles across Pennsylvania, serves as a reminder of Southwestern Pa.’s heritage and spans four distinct historical eras. The PA span of the National Road is now a part of Route 40.
